This is fantastic advice. Even though we're not a NP, we hired seven interns to handle our social media. So far, so good - they're all shining and excelling in using social media to increase awareness about our brand and the nonprofits we serve.

Great advice Kivi. I just finished three weeks working with an intern on behalf of a nonprofit where I do some pro bono work. This nonprofit has not used social media at all as of yet. I had some ideas about tactics but what this group really needed was a strategy. That's exactly where I had the intern start. I had him research the nonprofit as well as the relevant social media landscape. We then, together, developed some goals and objectives. From there, he explored possible tactics and developed a social media road map. Now it's the nonprofit's turn to examine the possibilities and implement what is realistic.

Throwing an intern into developing tactics without the above important first steps is a path to failure--or at least a lot of wasted time.

Your comments about the nonprofit being involved in the strategy and implementation also make great sense.
