Here’s the latest installment in our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators, where we ask you to describe your day in your own words.

We need to hear from you! Don’t be shy – tell us what you do in a typical day as a nonprofit communications pro

Angela got her B.S. in Natural Resources Management from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and an M.S. in Environmental Advocacy and Organizing from Antioch University New England in New Hampshire. She currently lives in Massachusetts. Angela began working with the Connecticut River Watershed Council in 2010 as an AmeriCorps member. She was hired as staff and the rest is history. She organizes events, prepares newsletters and annual reports, maintains the website and social media outreach, interacts with media, and enjoys helping people get to know CRWC and their local rivers.

And this is her typical day:

Before 8:00 a.m. – I try to start my day with a bit of yoga or a brief workout just to clear the cobwebs. Sometimes I read a little poem.

I do a quick check of my personal email and social media as well as a quick check of new activity on work social media.

I eat breakfast every day (usually while watching news headlines & weather) and grab a mug of tea to drink on my drive to work.

8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m – I usually arrive at work by 9am after a 45-minute commute.

Every Monday we have a check-in meeting with program, development & communications staff so we all know what we’re working on. This helps me stay on top of the current work of the whole organization as well as know when I will or won’t be able to reach people for questions or meetings.

One of the first things I do is check email to attend to any urgent matters.

Today I also got a video uploading to YouTube, which we’ll use in our year-end email appeals and social media.

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – I respond to a call from someone who got our appeal letter wanting to know more about our work.

Then take a phone call from a reporter wanting more info about our org’s participation in the upcoming Giving Tuesday online giving campaign. I filled him in on why we participate and how people can donate to us. (It resulted in a really nice article with good quotes! That’s not always the case.)

I get started on finalizing some Constant Contact email blasts to send out while I’m on holiday vacation later in the week.

Lunch, as usual, is at my desk. (The one exception is Thursdays when our staff make an effort to eat together in the conference room. A nice time to connect and talk non-work.)

12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – I put finishing touches on the YouTube video.

I confirm permission from a photographer to use her photo in one of our email blasts.

Then finish, test, and schedule the e-blasts.

We are in the process of rebranding so I discuss edits to some proposed logos with fellow staff and our consultants, then hand the process off to my boss to manage while I’m on vacation later in the week.

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – I carve out some time to put finishing touches on some images we’re using for social media for Black Friday/Giving Tuesday. I love when I get the chance to be creative with images and use Canva to quickly and easily create great stuff.

I schedule a bunch of posts for Facebook to post while I’m on vacation later in the week. I shoot off a couple tweets as well and peek at Hootsuite to see if anyone has been mentioning our org or our river and retweet some nice river pics.

After 4:00 p.m. – I wrap up work by 5pm most days and make a point to not take work home with me. Today I make sure to set an out of office message since I won’t be coming back until after Thanksgiving!

Today was a lot of juggling but things are wrapped up and I’m ready for vacation.

I spend the drive time home chatting with friends or family on the phone.

Thanks for sharing your day, Angela!
