Welcome DoormatLooking for the Nonprofit Marketing Guide.com Home Page?

This blog is all about do-it-yourself nonprofit communications and marketing. I love helping small and medium-sized nonprofits communicate more effectively with their members, donors, volunteers and other supporters, so that together, we can all make the world a better place. I do that as a blogger, trainer, coach and consultant.

I believe that even the smallest nonprofit staffs with the most modest budgets can achieve tremendous results through savvy marketing and communications. I hope this blog and my online marketing training and other resources encourage you to do just that, while helping you grow personally as a nonprofit marketer and communications professional.

Please comment on posts and feel free to contact me with your questions and comments. You can also learn more about hiring me as a coach or consultant.

Nonprofit Carnival of T-Day Treats

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Nov 19, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

Michelle Murrain at Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology has posted the Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, featuring some Thanksgiving-week treats. You’ll find posts on sustaining online communities, using Facebook, social marketing principles and much more.

Next week, the Carnival skips over the pond to London, where a new host, Bryan Miller of Giving in a Digital World, will open the big top on November 26. Bryan is especially interested in posts about engaging with supporters through online social networks. He’s accepting posts through the weekend through BlogCarnival, giving those of us in the U.S. some extra time to recover from the feasting. It’s the perfect excuse to break away from your in-laws — you must get your Carnival submission in!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Nonprofit Makeovers at the Carnival

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Nov 12, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

For this week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, let’s take a look at several nonprofit makeovers. You might just discover a few big or little changes you could make on your own to increase your nonprofit’s effectiveness.

Jono Smith at Katya’s Nonprofit Marketing Blog shows a before-and-after of the Network for Good home page — Can you spot the problems with the old page before looking at the new one? Five gold stars to Katya and The Gang for being willing to so publicly point out their own flaws so the rest of us can ogle and learn!

The Washington DC Goodwill has hired a stylist to write a fashionista blog that features great fashion finds from the Goodwill store, complete with Ebay auctions of items she highlights on Tuesdays. Way to make over your “old” product into something fresh and hot, Goodwill! Thanks to Joanne Fritz at nonprofit.about.com for the tip.

Marc Sirkin at npMarketing Blog offers tips on how to make over your career from the corporate world into nonprofit marketing. Britt Bravo at Have Fun - Do Good has tips for new college grads or career changers who want to get into the nonprofit sector.

Nancy Schwartz at Getting Attention highlights the effectiveness of the one-pager for nonprofits. Don’t have a single sheet about what your organization does and its recent accomplishments? It’s time to make over what you do have and create one!

Peter Brinckerhoff at Mission-Based Management talks about the makeover of IRS form 990.

Using Microsoft Word as your desktop publisher? Studio 501c recommends some professionally designed templates to make over your too-plain publications.

Benevon Blog explains how to make over your event schedule by eliminating events that no longer work.

The bonus host post from me here at Nonprofit Communications is the first of my five-part series this week on a makeover of an alumni direct mail piece by the University of California at Berkeley, my alma mater. Special thanks for Amy Cranch and Virginia Gray at Cal for their willingness to speak so openly about the behind-the-scenes process.

The Carnival travels to Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology with Michelle Murrain next week, November 19. Michelle is especially interested in posts that include why you are thankful for the work you do, in honor of Thanksgiving that week. Send your permalinks to npc.carnival AT yahoo.com by this Friday night, November 16.

How to Reach Younger Generations @ the Carnival

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Nov 5, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

This week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants focuses on how to reach younger generations. What do people in their teens and twenties care about? What makes them want to get involved with you? If you are curious about the answers, check out this week’s edition of the Carnival.

Get Your Blog Post Highlighted Next Week

Next week I’m hosting the Carnival back here at Nonprofit Communications where the theme will be “before and after makeovers.” I’ve been interviewing staff at UC Berkeley (my alma mater) about a makeover of a direct mail piece they did recently to recruit new donors among alumni. It’s a fascinating story with lots of interesting lessons, which I’ll share over the coming week. I’d love to hear about other make-overs in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, technology, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and the like. If you write a blog post this week that fits, send the permalink to me by Saturday night to npc.carnival AT yahoo.com or use the Blog Carnival form.

Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants: Fright Night

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Oct 29, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

Jeff Brooks at Donor Power Blog has posted this week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants with a “scary” theme in honor of Halloween. Find out what scares some of the top bloggers on nonprofit issues. I missed the carnival deadline, but posted my own scary story this morning.

Next week, the Carnival visits a new host, Remarkablog, with Sam Davidson of CoolPeopleCare. Since CPC is seeking to engage younger generations in the work of nonprofits, the theme of this week’s carnival will revolve around best practices about communicating with and attracting young people. What has worked? What doesn’t? Why does it matter that nonprofits seek out this demographic? As always, submit your post permalink by Friday night to npc.carnival AT yahoo.com or use the form at BlogCarnival and then read the edition on Monday.

Next week we travel to Donor Power Blog with host Jeff Brooks. It’s an open call, but in honor of Halloween, you get bonus points if your post is about something scary. If you would like Jeff to consider including your blog post in his edition of the Carnival, send your permalink by this weekend to npc.carnival AT yahoo.com or use the form at BlogCarnival.

Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants: Blog Action Day

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Oct 17, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

Michele Martin at the Bamboo Project has posted this week’s edition of the Carnival. We participated in Blog Action Day on Monday and so the posts you’ll read all relate somehow to the environment. My personal fave in the group is Michele’s on how environmental groups are using social media. Check it out in the full Carnival.

Next week, we head over to Nedra’s at Spare Change. See you there!

Learning from Your Mistakes @ the Carnival

Posted by Kivi Leroux Miller on Oct 9, 2007 in Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants, Nonprofit Communications

This week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants is up at Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology. Michelle asked bloggers to talk about the mistakes we’ve made with clients and she got a few very honest and interesting replies. Check it out — it’s great reading for consultants and those who hire them.

Next week the Carnival travels to The Bamboo Project. Our hostess Michele would like us to participate in Blog Action Day, where the theme is the environment. Write your post on Monday, October 15 with some environmental tie-in and then send your permalink to Michele at npc.carnival @ yahoo.com or use the Blog Carnival form. Michele will then post the carnival on Wednesday instead of the usual Monday.
