BRAND NEW Coaching Program

Led by Kivi Leroux Miller

Join the “Mastering the Seven Writing Styles” Coaching Program

September 30 – November 22, 2019

You’ll get expert writing advice from Kivi Leroux Miller and your peers, while practicing your own coaching skills on giving writing feedback to others. Space is limited.

Most nonprofit communicators consider themselves to be good writers.

But what really sets apart the great writers in the nonprofit world is not just proficiency but mastery of seven distinct types of copywriting.

The 7 Styles of Writing

  1. Microcontent - Short but powerful pieces of copy such as headlines, subject lines, captions, and tweets.
  2. Storytelling – Narratives about participants and supporters that include characters, descriptive details, emotions, and plot.
  3. Donor-Centered Copywriting – Newsletter, appeal, and thank-you copy that delivers repeated emotional gratification and gratitude to donors.
  4. News Writing - Straightforward, factual writing found in press releases, reports, and blogs.
  5. Conversion Copywriting - Persuasive writing that motivates immediate action, including clicking, donating, registering, etc.
  6. Lifestyle Writing - Casual or informal yet engaging content including listicles and social media content.
  7. Thought Leadership - Authoritative and opinionated content that positions the person or organization as an expert and leader.

  • Supportive feedback and coaching on your own writing from other nonprofit communications professionals
  • Practice coaching others that you can apply within your own organization

How the “Coach and Be Coached” Program Works

We’ll work together through two different types of video calls. On both types of calls, we’ll look at draft writing submitted by participants for discussion. All participants must share at least three samples of their writing for group discussion. It’s the heart of the program!

60-Minute Pro Tip Calls on Selected Writing Styles

We’ll have three Pro Tip Calls on the Writing Styles. How much time we spend on each of the seven styles will depend on the interests of the group. For example, if there’s a lot of interest in one style, we may spend a whole call on it. If there’s no interest in another style, we may not cover it during a Pro Call, relying on the initial webinars and discussion in the private Group Chat instead.  During these calls, Kivi and/or guest experts will provide additional training and feedback on writing samples.

You will also receive additional training on how to give feedback and coach others on their writing.

Pro Tip Calls will take place from 1:00 – 2:00 pm Eastern (10:00 am Pacific) every other week on Wednesdays: October 2, 16, and 30.

90-Minute “Coach and Be Coached” Calls

During the first 30 minutes of these calls, Kivi will present the drafts that we’ll be working on that day and provide some training on how to coach others.

During the second 30 minutes, we’ll break into smaller Zoom Breakout Rooms where each group will brainstorm ways to improve a writing selection. This is where you’ll practice giving others feedback on their writing.

In the final 30 minutes, we’ll return to the larger group to share out the best suggestions from the small groups.

These calls will take place the weeks of October 7, October 21 and November 4. We will conduct a Doodle poll of registered participants to find the best times for these calls doing our best to ensure that everyone can attend at least two of the three dates.

All calls will be recorded in case you have to miss one.

This coaching program also comes with recordings of our popular webinar series The 7 Styles of Writing Every Nonprofit Communicator Should Master

During this two-part training webinar series and coaching program, we review today’s best practices for seven kinds of nonprofit writing: Microcontent, Storytelling, Donor-Centered Copywriting, News Writing, Conversion Copywriting, Lifestyle Writing, and Thought Leadership.

We explore:

  • What’s unique about each style
  • Dos and don’ts when writing in each style
  • Which styles best match which nonprofit communications channels
  • What’s required to properly repurpose content between the styles

You’ll also learn how to coach others in your organization to understand and use these seven styles too, making your job as an editor much easier.

Giving feedback on writing can be hard to hear and hard to deliver, so we’ll coach you on giving and receiving that kind of feedback.

Webinar 1: Introduction to the Seven Writing Styles

In Part 1, you’ll learn about the seven different writing styles. We’ll cover the best practices about when, where and how to use each style. You’ll also receive recommended resources to help you continue to master the seven styles over time.

Webinar 2: Editing Yourself and Others on the Seven Writing Styles

In Part 2, we’ll apply lessons from the first webinar to real nonprofit copy, including how to repurpose content from one writing style to another. You’ll also learn how to be a better writing coach and editor within your organization.
