If you are wondering what to budget for your nonprofit social media ads and boosts in 2023, the data from our recent survey for the annual Nonprofit Communications Trends Report might help.

We asked 509 nonprofit communicators what their total 2022 budget for social media ads and boosts was, and here is what they said:

Thirty-four percent (34%) reported a budget of up to $1,000, with another 12% reporting only up to $100.

Eighteen percent (18%) said they could spend up to $10,000, with just 6% of nonprofits reporting budgets larger than that.

Thirty-one percent (31%) reported having to budget at all.

How Nonprofit  Spend Their Social Media Ad Budgets

Facebook receives the overwhelming amount of these ad dollars, with two-thirds of nonprofits reporting they spent ad dollars there.

Following Facebook, the top channels for nonprofit social media ad spending were Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter, in that order.

Ad Budgets by Organizational Size

In the 2023 Nonprofit Communications Trends Report coming January 18, 2023, we’ll share this data by nonprofit organization budget size and communications team size for more context.  Not surprisingly, the ad budget trends with organizational budget size (the bigger the nonprofit’s budget, the bigger the ad budget in general). Larger organizations are also more likely to be experimenting with ads in channels other than Facebook and Instagram.
