Al Rosenberg

Welcome to the latest installment in our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators! This series lets you describe your workday in your own words.

Al Rosenberg is the Director of Marketing & Communications for OneTable, a national nonprofit empowering millennials to find and build meaningful Shabbat dinner rituals and practices. She is also a board member at Mishkan, a spiritual community in Chicago reenvisioning Jewish life and engagement. In her free time she explores Chicago, volunteers with literacy programs, and mentors young women entering the workforce. This is the year she’ll adopt a dog.

And this is her typical Friday:

Before 8:00 a.m. –  I love walking to work. It’s a long walk, but I listen to a podcast (like Forever 35, Unorthodox, or By the Book), send early morning thoughts to my team via Slack, and look over my calendar.

8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m – My mornings are for emails. What’s urgent? Do I need to rearrange my day?

I use this time to check in with my team. Since it’s Friday, I check in and make sure everything’s done for the week and we’re ready for a relaxing Shabbat/weekend. Otherwise I prepare to hustle for the day so we are ready by 4pm.

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – I front load my meetings each week. By Friday it’s mostly wrapping up projects and, my favorite, dreaming up new projects.

Lunch is usually at my desk, but if I’m traveling to one of our other offices (we have 9 across the country) we definitely go out.

12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – After lunch I’ll look over the week, try my best to get to Inbox Zero (this is incredibly rare for me), and do the best Friday activity: read our survey responses. We send out a weekly satisfaction survey to our participants and I get to read all of their cool ideas and feedback.

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m – My last tasks for Friday are to say goodbye to the week’s to-do list, make sure everything is updated in Salesforce, and create my to-do list for the next week.

I work in a WeWork, so my to-do list is normally written on the wall next to my desk.

After 4:00 p.m. – As I leave the office on Fridays, I water my plants, empty my humidifier, and head out to Shabbat dinner – either a friend’s or my own.

Thanks for sharing your day, Al!
