Don't have enough time to plan, because you just do, do, do? Feel overwhelmed because your to-do list is too long, and yet still growing by the day? Wish you could be more strategic instead of reacting? The only way to get on top of your workload is to streamline the way you work, and the smartest way to do that is by creating “simple rules.”

What are Simple Rules?

In their book, Simple Rules: How to Thrive in a Complex World, Donald Sull and Kathleen M. Eisenhardt define simple rules as “shortcut strategies that save time and effort by focusing our attention and simplifying the way we process information.” They help us simplify complex systems and decisions so that we can move more quickly through our daily lives at work and home. “Never go on a second date with someone who only talks about themselves” is a simple rule. Triage procedures used in emergency rooms and on battlefields based on pulse and respiration are simple rules. Sounds like what you need as a communications director, right?

Simple Rules for Nonprofit Communications

Nonprofit marketing and fundraising have simple rules too, and that’s what we’ll cover during this brand-new webinar.

We’ll look at six different categories of simple rules for communications directors.

The first three help you make better, faster decisions:

These are the “In or Out” or “Yes or No” or “Always or Never” rules.

These help you rank alternatives.

These tell you when to stop looking at alternatives, or when to stop doing certain kinds of work and to change course.

The next three are more about the process of getting things down better and faster:

These specify that certain actions take place when triggering events happen.

These guide the basics of executing tasks.

These explain how individuals should behave to produce a group result.

What You'll Get from This Webinar

During the webinar, Kivi Leroux Miller will show you how to apply these six kinds of simple rules to some of your biggest, time-consuming headaches, such as:

  • What do you do with all those good ideas everyone throws around? We'll explore simple rules that help you discriminate between the good ideas and all the rest, then communicate that diplomatically to others.
  • Who is responsible for what and when? What about deadlines and how decisions are made on different drafts? We’ll talk about applying simple rules to your content creation, review, and approval process.
  • Feeling like you don’t have enough content for all of your communications channels? Let’s talk about simple rules that build repurposing into your content creation process.
  • Always starting from scratch or have staff constantly asking for custom work? We’ll talk about simple rules for everyday communications routines and rules for when something requires an extra special touch.
  • Feeling guilty about taking time off because you are the only one who knows how to do the work? You definitely need some simple rules to help empower others to work in your place with no fear or guilt involved!
