I just finished Part 2 of our webinar series on Social Media Strategies for Nonprofits that Won’t Waste Your Time.

Today, we moved to the right side: Be Practical. Nonprofits have things they need to talk about but only have a limited amount of time to put into social media, thus we need to talk about social media content creation in a very practical way.

After talking about each of the blue circles on the right, I did a poll asking participants where they wanted to start with implementing this approach. As I did on Tuesday, I’m sharing the poll results with you today, so you can see how other nonprofit communicators are thinking about these strategies.

Focus on Core Topics

One of the points I made that clearly made an impression was that nonprofits need to stop trying so hard to attract social media influencers to their causes and TO BECOME an influencer themselves! It’s very akin to being a thought leader but with some elements that are special to social media.

We also talked about how to create content that’s really relevant to people, which is absolutely essential for social media engagement. We talked about how the Six Rs of Message Relevance apply to social and looked at lots of nonprofit examples. Being more Revealing and Responsive topped the list, which makes sense since that was much of what we talked about on Tuesday too.

Finally, we talked about content repurposing. Make less, share more! Nearly half of the participants want to give more thought to creating long, short, and visual forms of all the content they create. Getting comfortable with repurposing and rethinking social media workflows were next in this poll.
