Here’s the latest installment in our series on the “Day in the Life” of nonprofit communicators, where we ask you to describe your day in your own words.

We’d need to hear from more of you! Don’t be shy – tell us what you do in a typical day as a nonprofit communications pro. ~Kristina

Amber Genet is the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Barberton Community Foundation. She is passionate about community and creating new ways for people to be involved and engaged. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Public Relations & Business Communication and completed her Masters in Communication from the University of Akron. Amber contributes to her role as a DMC by leading the creation of printed & electronic materials, media relations and promotion of Foundation. She is a 2014 recipient of the Greater Akron Chamber’s 30 for the Future Award for her impact and leadership in the community and sits on the Board of Directors for United Disability Services of Akron. 

And this is her typical day:

Before 8:00 a.m. – Check my email in the morning. The night before I review my calendar and prepare myself for the things that I need to do the following day.

I eat breakfast (yogurt/protein bar/ect…) at my desk as I boot up the system.

8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m – Return phone calls, catch up on emails. Pull up Facebook and check the notifications for our page. I have these planned out for up to a month in advance. I reschedule posts if something pops up and create new ones based off of the news or what I’m seeing on social media.

I grab a hot tea mid morning and visit with my co-workers. I check in to see how meetings they have had went or listen to any conversations that might be going on in regards to the city or the organization. This helps me to keep a pulse on what is going on so that I can anticipate where I will be needed in a communications capacity.

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – I like to eat lunch with others. I’m social and talking about my day and life helps me to feel connected to those I interact with at work.

Sometimes I have meetings over lunch or following lunch so I rarely have the same situation every day.

12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – This is the time where I revisit my “to-do” list I keep on my desk and work on projects that may not be time sensitive but that need my attention.

2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – Break in the afternoon and either walk to the coffee shop or make one in house. This is the time I’ll catch up on reading new papers, articles, checking out new resources.

After 4:00 p.m. – I officially work till 5 pm. I am either really productive in the last hour or useless. I can knock off a few items that needed to be done and feel accomplished or else my mind checks out and I count the minutes till 5. I find that this is dependent on how my whole day went. Sometimes the day can take the energy out of me and other times it feels like I have a few more hours worth of work in me.
