During this brand-new webinar, Kivi Leroux Miller will help you identify and tackle all kinds of communications decisions that your nonprofit needs to make to be as effective as possible. 

First, we’ll start by reviewing some decision-making fundamentals:

  • All good decisions are based in logic AND emotion. We’ll talk about what that looks like for communications teams, and what to do when one is dominating the other. We’ll discuss the roles of data and instincts in communications decision-making.
  • Knowing a few basic criteria can eliminate a lot of your choices. We’ll talk about how to develop decision-making criteria for your team, so you can quickly eliminate options and make decisions more manageable.
  • Know what “enough” looks like. How do you know if you are ready to decide? Is your work good enough? We’ll talk about how to set some realistic standards to get comfortable with risk and to avoid perfectionism. 
  • Decision making requires space and time – but not too much! We’ll talk about good habits to build around when and how you make decisions so that you give yourself enough time to weigh options and risks without paralyzing yourself.  

Next, we’ll look at how to apply these fundamentals to the kinds of decisions that most nonprofit communications teams have to make, from the big strategic questions (what’s the role of communications in meeting organizational goals?) down to the daily grind (what should I post on Facebook today?). 

Where does the decision live? What nonprofit communications decisions belong in a multi-year strategic plan? Annual workplan? Campaign plan? Editorial calendar? Someone’s individual to-do list? Kivi will share her advice after doing this work for nearly two decades.

Who should be making which decisions? What communications decisions should be made by the board? By the executive director? By program staff? By the communicator director and other communications staff? You’ll learn what the most effective organizations do. 

What process does the person or team making the decision use? Should they decide unilaterally, in consultation, or via consensus? We’ll discuss when to each approach in common nonprofit communications scenarios. 

What happens when a bad decision is made? We’ll talk about how to review decisions and how to learn from good ones and bad ones. 

Finally, we’ll look at some of the tools that communications teams can use to document decisions, so you can minimize how often you have to revisit them:
